We’re on a mission to redefine clean skincare, and tallow’s place within it. To us, clean doesn’t mean removing a few known toxins and replacing them with ‘better’ chemical alternatives. It also doesn’t mean greenwashed marketing with promises of botanical healing.
It’s pretty simple, our skin is our body’s largest organ, and it absorbs what we put on it. How has Big Skincare fooled us for so long? Toxic synthetics, endocrine disruptors, and ingredients that strip our skin of its natural healing powers, only to make us rely on them more. We're confused how they’ve gotten away with it for so long. Don’t get me wrong, science has its place in skincare. And I’m not saying that the solution is a jar of beef fat alone (but if that’s your thing, I support it). What we need is a return to real ingredients, without the bullsh*t. We need professional cosmetic formulators to prioritize what is good, and not the easiest way to turn a profit.
It seemed obvious to me, but no one was doing it. There were brands, even large ones, who had the best of intentions in creating whole-ingredient skincare that truly nourishes– but they weren’t doing it the right way. Their essential oils weren’t dispersed correctly, turning their tallow products rancid and grainy. They were creating whipped tallow products that, unbeknownst to most consumers, was leaving them with half air and half oxidized fat. Even worse, they were creating these products in non-sterile, apothecary-like environments. Seems innocent, but you’d be shocked at how sneaky microbes (and mold) can be.
So I started Flora Fauna. It literally means plants and animals, because that’s what we use. We also developed safe preservation systems to ensure the stability and efficacy of our products. We test each individual batch for bacteria, mold, and other pathogens. Because natural skincare should be held to the same standard of its less-than-natural counterparts.
No endocrine disruptors, hexane-clad or high PUFA seed oils, toxic synthetics, or greenwashing. Our packaging is compostable, up-cycled, renewable, and/or recyclable.
Our ingredients are ethically produced and sustainably sourced. Eventually, my goal is to run this operation regeneratively, but until then we’ll stay committed to processes that ensure the best for the planet and its people. As above, so below.
